Named by settlers as the Bell Valley, this watershed of the Navarro river is the land of the Tabahtea people. Whispertree Retreat embodies a commitment to the regeneration of Earth and people, and believes that transformation takes place when we slow down to connect with the land and ourselves. This natural, Northern California setting offers a restorative container for both the journey inward and our exploration of leadership for greater citizenship and stewardship.setting offers a restorative container for both the journey inward and our exploration of leadership for greater citizenship.

In addition to the experiential leadership curriculum, participants will have time to spend hiking, reflecting, and exploring the natural environment of the retreat location, including a journey to the stunning California Pacific coast and majestic redwoods.

Program Details

The Academy for Inner Leadership offers future leaders the skills to invest in their own self-understanding and initiate social change mindfully, and sustainably at home or abroad. The curriculum incorporates the following components:

  1. Contemplative and Personal Growth Practices:

Research is demonstrating that inner work practices, especially formal meditation, can change the structure and functioning of our brain over time, which in turn impacts the way we form relationships and solve problems. The program incorporates daily contemplative practices to foster wellbeing, reduce stress, and invite insight including: meditation, breathwork, qigong, and yoga.

2. Mindfulness Based Leadership Skills:

Mindfulness practices are particularly relevant to the ways that leaders engage with others and solve problems in their organizations and broader society. This program applies mindfulness with the purpose of developing leadership capacity. Through personal experience, you will learn to

  • examine your intentions and default approaches to change, leadership, and relatedness;

  • connect and communicate more deeply with others to foster trust;

  • develop compassion and diffuse conflict; and

  • define your sense of purpose and unique contribution to the world.

3. Mindful Design Lab:

Mindfulness allows us to become adept at setting aside ego, assumptions, and bias in order to inquire and listen more clearly. When leaders invest in self-awareness and deeper connection, they crack open deeper potential for innovation and longer-term sustainable impact. The design lab involves a series of frameworks that use mindfulness as a design tool to craft social issue solutions. You will learn the conscious social change approach, and walk away with tools you can apply towards your own social solutions at any time in the future.
